• Double-layered lenses: These goggles have two lenses, separated by a small buffer zone of air in between. We completely seal this area so that no moisture can get in. This dual-layer system prevents the warm air from getting into contact with the outer lens.
• Anti-fog coating: Another option is for the brand to apply an anti-fog layer to the lens.
• Vents: Vents in the googles let some cold air in, and this can reduce the amount of fogging.

Lens Colour and Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

The colour of the lens plays a significant role in how well you see. The different colours combat glare or low-light conditions so that you can see clearly. VLT speaks to how much light makes it through to your eyes.

Lighter tints have a better VLT because they let more light through. So, on a cloudy, dull day, reach for:

• Gold
• Yellow
• Amber
• Rose
• Green

Darker tints are better for bright sunny days where there's a lot of glare. On a gorgeous day, reach for:

• Gray
• Brown
• Copper
• Dark Blue

The only time you should wear clear lenses is at night or in low-light conditions.

UV Protection

Look for models that offer 100 percent protection from UVA and UVB radiation.

Polarisation

Polarising lenses are not essential if you have an excellent lens light filter in place. Still, they're excellent for reducing overall glare.

Photochromatic

This coating is another nice feature to have. Why? The lenses change tint levels to match the lighting outside. In darker areas, they lighten up. In the sunshine, they darken up.

Mirrored

In this case, the lens coating is on the outside. This mirroring is a reflective coating. It reduces the amount of light coming through significantly by bouncing it off.

Interchangeable

Choosing a pair with interchangeable lenses gives you maximum versatility. Find options that are simple to change in the field.

The Fit

Getting the fit right is essential. You're likely to be wearing these goggles for hours at a time, so make sure they're comfortable. They should fit snugly so that no light can penetrate through any gaps.

Modern manufacturers use thermoplastic or polyurethane because they're durable and flexible. Thermoplastic is the more flexible of the two and so holds up better in the cold.

• If you’re going skiing wearing a beanie, you can wear any goggles that you like. If you’re wearing a helmet, though, you should ensure that the goggles won’t get in the way.
• Can you adjust the strap? That may seem like a strange question, but it's essential. Is there one buckle or two? How easy is it to adjust the strap?
• The padding inside must be of excellent quality and plush to help make the glasses more comfortable. The padding also helps to lift the lens away from the face, which reduces fogging.
