What to Look for in a Good Set of Ski Goggles Women’s

Choosing the right model is essential. Let's go through some of the aspects you should consider when selecting your next set of goggles.

The Shape of the Lens

Lenses that curve following your face shape are nothing new to you. What might be new to you is that lenses can curve vertically as well. Here are the primary differences between the two:

• Cylindrical: This is the more common type because they're less expensive. They protect you from glare well. Unfortunately, you need to sacrifice some of your peripheral vision too.
• Spherical: Have you watched the movie Top Gun? While flying, the pilots wear spherical lenses. These allow for a far wider field of vision and do a better job of cutting glare.

Ventilation

If there’s one thing that drives us nuts, it’s a pair of glasses that fog up five minutes into skiing. That’s why our glasses contain all of the following design features to ensure that they won’t fog over easily:

• Dual-layered lenses: Lenses fog when they get warm. The cold air hits the heated surface, and you've got fog. A dual-layered lens is excellent at counteracting that. It ensures that the warm air is kept separate from the outer lens through the use of an inner lens.
• Anti-fog Coating: This is a special coating that helps glasses stop fogging over.
• Vents: Installing vents serves two purposes – anti-fogging and comfort. The vents allow the warm air to escape and some cold air in. As a result, the internal and external temperatures are similar.

Lens Colour

You can get hot pink lenses if you like. But what you have to consider is how effective they'll be when you're using them. Generally speaking, darker colours are better for when it's bright outside. The heavy tinting prevents a lot of light from passing through the lenses.

Lighter colours are better for those times when there's not a lot of natural light. If it's a cloudy day or starting to get dark, for example, you'll want a light colour to allow more light through. You'll be able to see better.

Here are the colours that you should look out for:

• Green

• Gold

When the light is bright outside:

• Gray
• Copper
• Dark Blue
• Brown

Keep the clear lenses for extremely low-light conditions.

Other Factors to Think About

UV Protection

Too much exposure to UV radiation can damage your eyesight. The extra glare from the snow intensifies the effect. You need glasses certified to protect against UV radiation. Cheap and nasty options might cut the glare, but they don’t protect your eyesight.

Polarisation

Polarising lenses are used to cut out the glare. Manufacturers do this through the use of a laminate. This laminate only lets light through if it hits the lens at the right angle. The light coming from the sun is allowed through because it comes in at a vertical angle.

Reflected glare hits the lens horizontally, so it’s blocked out.

Photochromatic

Photochromatic lenses are useful in areas where conditions may change quickly. If you’re heading out for a day on the slopes, they can be invaluable. In the early morning, while the light is still relatively weak, the lenses become lighter to allow more light in.

When the sun’s at its full strength, the lenses darken to exclude more light.

Mirrored

A mirrored coating works by reflecting most of the light hitting the lenses.

Interchangeable

Where possible, find a goggle set that allows you to swap out lenses easily. That way, you can carry some spares with you on the slopes.

The Fit

Finally, you want a good fit. If the fit is too tight, you won’t be able to wear it for long. If it’s too loose, you’re not getting adequate protection. Aim for a snug fit instead.
